We get it – user management can be a headache that only becomes more complicated as your business scales. Outside of user seats for new applications and managing budgets along with them, employees come and go. This causes outdated user seats to become security vulnerabilities unless they’re dealt with promptly.

At Mailgun by Pathwire, this type of account security is one of our biggest priorities, and we’re always looking for ways to make the Mailgun experience more secure and scalable. In an effort to do just that, we’re thrilled to announce that SAML authentication is now available for our Scale and Enterprise plan customers.

What is SAML Single Sign-On (SSO)?

This one’s fairly simple: Security assertion markup language (SAML) is an open channel of communication between a SAML identity provider (IDP) and a SAML authority.

These communications (a.k.a. assertions) allow the IDP and SAML authority to authenticate and approve the passage of data between each other. This information includes important stuff like login credentials or user attributes.

Because of this channel, SAML authentication allows businesses to manage their user identities for multiple applications from one IDP of their choice. In doing so, businesses can easily manage application access across their organization and have greater control over access to third-party applications. It’s account security made easy.

Introducing SAML SSO for Mailgun

SSO through SAML allows senders to improve their account security and seamlessly manage users – all from their identity provider of choice.

In implementing the SAML 2.0 protocol into Mailgun, we wanted to make sure that we supported a wide variety of IDPs like Okta, Auth0, OneLogin, ADFS, and AWS IAM. Regardless of your provider, you will need some data from your IDP in order to enable SAML SSO for your Mailgun accounts.

There’s no need to add another provider to the mix. Just grab your current IDP details and plug them into the SAML configuration under your account settings – pretty simple. For more in depth instructions on how to implement SSO, you can check out our help center for more information.

If you’re one of our Scale or Enterprise customers, you already have SAML available to you today. Not on either plan? Upgrading is easy.
